Top middle and base notes

Essential oil “notes”

Essential oil notes

Once you become more experienced with essential oils and as your collection grows you may want to learn more about blending.

Although you may simply be looking at blending a therapeutic oil for a certain ailment, the fragrance should still be “balanced” and in harmony and this is where the fragrance notes come into play.

Essential oils are classified by their “notes” or scent characteristics.

Top, middle and base

This chart shows the typical classification and can be used in combining essential oils.

Top Notes

Essential oils that are classified as top notes normally evaporate very fast and typically have anti-viral properties. They tend to be light, fresh and uplifting in nature and are usually inexpensive. Top notes are highly volatile, fast acting, and give the first impression of the blend. However, they are not very long lasting due to the evaporation.

Middle Notes

The bulk of essential oils are considered middle notes and normally give body to the blend and have a balancing effect. The aroma of middle notes are not always immediately evident and may take a couple of minutes to establish their scent. They are normally warm and soft fragrances.

Base Notes

Essential oils that are classified as base notes are normally very heavy and their fragrance is very solid. It will be present for a long time and slows down the evaporation of the other oils. These fragrances are normally intense and heady. They are normally rich and relaxing in nature and are typically the most expensive of all oils.

Blending

Blending does not only rely on the notes alone, since some oils are extremely fragrant and in some cases, overpoweringly so.

When using these very strongly fragranced oils, it is best to add a drop of oil at a time to prevent it from overpowering your entire blend.

Have fun and experiment

Blending oils can be fun, so remember that the end result should be to your liking, so it is no problem if you do not follow the guidelines about using the different notes at all – they are only guidelines to help you along.

The purity and potency of an essential oil is crucial to its effectivity. Panic attack essential oils

Essential oils for panic attacks and anxiety

For many years I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression and one of the symptoms, particularly if I’m very busy, feeling under pressure or overwhelmed, I suffer panic attacks.

A panic attack is a sudden feeling of overwhelming anxiety, and it’ll peak within minutes. A person who’s suffering from a panic attack may experience sweating, pounding heart, palpitations, accelerated heart rate, shaking or trembling, feelings of choking, feelings of shortness of breath or smothering, chest pain or discomfort, dizziness, nausea, abdominal distress, fear of dying, fear of losing control or numbness or tingling sensations.

Luckily, there are essential oils that can help relieve panic attacks, and the best essential oils for my panic attacks include lavender, rose, vetiver, ylang-ylang, bergamot, and chamomile. Read on to learn more about how essential oils can help you if you suffer them too.

Lavender

The most common essential oil for panic attacks is lavender. It may have a calming, relaxing effect when it’s inhaled. The reason for this is because it’s considered a nervous system restorative. It helps with sleep, restlessness, irritability, nervous stomach and nervous tension. Clinical trials show that inhaling lavender essential oil reduces stress and anxiety.

Rose

Rose essential oil is similar to lavender. It’s commonly used for relieving anxiety, and it significantly reduces it. Similar to lavender essential oil, rose also has calming, relaxing effects.

Vetiver

Vetiver oil is a nervous system tonic that causes calmness and stabilization, and it decreases hypersensitivity and nervousness. It’s helpful to use the oil for panic attacks and shock. Did you know that vetiver oil helps the immune, respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, digestive, excretory and nervous systems? If you’re having trouble falling asleep because of panic attacks, vetiver oil will help you fall asleep because it’s a natural sedative.

Ylang-ylang

Ylang-ylang is a popular oil that’s commonly used for anxiety and depression. The oil has calming and morally and spiritually elevating effects. The oil has been known to help with bravery and confidence. It’ll help relieve fearfulness. Similar to vetiver oil, ylang-ylang is a naturally strong sedative.

A 2006 study showed that ylang-ylang, bergamot, and lavender oils reduced psychological stress responses, serum cortisol levels, and high blood pressure levels when all of the oils were used once a day for four weeks.

If you have low blood pressure or sensitive skin, you may want to try another oil for panic attacks as ylang-ylang can decrease blood pressure and cause skin irritation.

Bergamot

Bergamot oil has calming, relaxing effects. It’s often used to help treat depression by increasing energy, but it can also help with insomnia, agitation, and relaxation.

According to a study, the oil has been proven to reduce corticosterone response in rats. Another study conducted in 2011 showed that applying bergamot oil with other oils help relieve depression and anxiety.

Chamomile

Chamomile oil may help with irritability, anxiety, and worry. A study found that the chamomile oil capsules eased anxiety symptoms when taken by mouth. If you’re allergic to ragweed, there’s a small risk that chamomile oil may cause an allergic reaction.

Final Words

Diffuser in the home

Essential oils can be used in many ways. Diffusing is very popular for anxiety and I always have a diffuser upstairs and down at home, but oral and topical application can be used also so I carry my roller ‘doterra touch’ blends with me and pop a drop under my tongue in an emergency.

3 Great Reasons to add essential oils to your Spa, Beauty Salon, Massage Practice or Clinic

  • Do you work at, own or operate a spa, beauty salon, massage practice or clinic?
  • Are you considering adding essential oils for retail, massage or aromatherapy skin care to the services you offer?
  • Would you like more information on how to offer essential oils and skin care products, treatments or essential oils easily?
  • Want to increase profits in your business.

If you answered yes, then you’re in the right place!

Adding essential oils to your business

Incorporating essential oil hair, face and skin care into your business can be a simple, pain-free experience.

It can provide many additional beauty benefits to your customers and at a cost-effective wholesale rate for your company and 25% profit.

While aromatherapy massage and aromatherapy skin care are different and require some different products, you can still use many of the same products in both treatments. So if you have a massage therapist on your team, and you’re considering adding essential oil skin care treatments to your spa, salon, clinic or practice, aromatherapy massages might be a great upsell item for your customer that will require little additional overhead, investment or inventory.

Alternatively if you want a larger inventory there’s as much choice as you want.

The only investments required to add essential oil skincare to your list of items, services or treatments your company offers is a little time and some inventory. While aromatherapy massage can be done quite well and have noticeable results for the body, face and skin with just a carrier oil and some essential oils, to properly approach aromatherapy skin care, you might need a few more items. Luckily, if you know where to look, many of these items can be found at affordable prices while still being made from 100% all-natural ingredients.

The time investment is just to learn more about the products and essential oils involved.

But what do I actually do with these essential oils?!

All of these oils can be used in an almost endless number of ways on you and your family. I’ve downloaded the Modern Essentials app for my phone and I use it whenever I want a bit of inspiration for using the oils, or when I’ve bought a new oil and I need some guidance on how to use it.

If you do a quick search online for ‘doTerra’ and the name of the oil, you’ll find fantastic guidance pages called Uses and Benefits. Each oil has its own Uses and Benefits page. Heres the 3 ways to use doterra oils.

As ever, always read the label, and you can find all the important information on the relevant Uses and Benefits page.

Here are our top ways to use each of the oils in doTerra’s Family Essentials Kit:

LAVENDER

Lavender is best known for its calming and relaxing qualities. doTerra’s Lavender can be used to support a good night’s sleep (yes please!) and can reduce the appearance of skin imperfections and irritations. There are countless ways to use this wonderful oil, known as ‘the Swiss army knife’ of essential oils! Here are a few of my favourite:

Skin irritation including sunburn and nappy rash: Add 2-3 tablespoons of doTerra Fractionated Coconut Oil to 5-7 drops of doTerra Lavender. For nappy rash, see Melaleuca below for a homemade cream.

Relaxation and tension release: Add 3-4 drops to a diffuser (I use the doTerra Petal Diffuser) or apply to the back of the neck and temples.

Beautiful aroma in your home: Add 3-4 drops to a diffuser, sit back and let it work its magic!

Cooking: Add 1-2 drops to a cake of biscuit mixture and a tiny amount to frosting mixture – yum!

A good night’s sleep: Rub a drop or two on the bottom of feet or put a few drops on your pillow. A lovely way to use this oil on your children.

Lavender blends well with: Bergamot, Citrus Bliss, Marjoram and Basil essential oils.

LEMON

This oil is zingy, fresh and has lots of uses. It’s known for its purifying properties and so it can be used to cleanse and deodorise surfaces and the air. It also aids digestion and supports healthy respiratory function. It typically takes 15 lemons to fill the 5ml bottle in the Family Essential Kit!

Here are just a few ways to use Lemon essential oil:

Start your day with a refreshing, cleansing drink: Add 1 drop (just one! This oil will last you!) to a glass of water. It will naturally cleanse the body and aid digestion.

Lift and energise your mood and help cleanse and purify the air and surfaces: Add 3-4 drops  to a diffuser for a fresh, bright and clean smelling home. Blend 2 drops of Lemon with 1 drop of Lime, 1 drop of Lavender and 1 drop of Rosemary for a “Clean Summer Kitchen” aroma.

Add a sweet lemon zing to your smoothie or dessert without the sugar: Add 1 drop to a smoothie.

Natural cleaning agent: From glass cleaner, to all-purpose cleaning sprays, using your Lemon oil as part of your household cleaning routine is a wonderful way to eliminate nasty chemicals.

Get rid of sticky residue: If a price tag has left a sticky mark, or your toddler’s sticky hands are all over the wall, floor, chair, table…basically everywhere, then add a bit of Lemon oil to a cloth and gently rub.

Lemon essential oil blends well with: Grapefruit, Lime or Bergamot essential oils to bring out the bright energising scent of Lemon. It goes well with spicy essential oils like Wild Orange and Cinnamon. It also compliments Douglas Fir and Wintergreen.

PEPPERMINT

So. Many. Uses! This oil is amazing! Let’s dive straight into just some of the ways you can use it:

A fresh, energising addition to water and smoothies: Add 1-2 drops to your smoothie for a refreshing twist. Add 1 drop to a cup of water with some sliced fruit for a deliciously infused drink. These tasty drinks will help promote healthy respiratory function and clear breathing.

A quick pick-me-up: Wake up your senses and promote a feeling of energy by putting 1 drop in the palm of your hand and inhaling deeply. Add 1 drop of Frankincense (included in the Family Essentials Kit) and 1 drop of Wild Orange to lift your mood (Orange), promote feelings of relaxation (Frankincense) and promote a sense of soothing (Peppermint). You’ll feel energised and relaxed in no time!

Pimp our massage oil and shampoo: Add a drop or two to your favourite message oil, or combine with doTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil, for a cooling and soothing feeling. Add Lavender as well, and you’ve got the perfect mix. Add a drop to your shampoo to pamper your scalp.

Repel bugs and spiders: Many bugs don’t like the potent smell of Peppermint, so add 1-3 drops to a cotton ball and put in the corner of the rooms the creepy crawlies love the most!

A soothing and relaxing aroma: Add 2-3 drops to your diffuser.

Peppermint oil blends well with: Lavender, Lemon, Melaleuca, Oregano (all included in the Family Essentials Kit), Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Marjoram, and Cypress. Try a blend of two or more in your diffuser.

MELALEUCA (TEA TREE)

Did you ever put Tea Tree oil on a spot when you were a teenager and wince as it stung your skin, while you prayed it would get rid of the spot before school the next morning?! I know I did! Truth is, high quality, 100% natural Melaleuca (Tea Tree) from doTerra will not sting at all and will  reduce the spot and redness before morning! There are endless other ways to use this versatile essential oil:

Purify and freshen the air: Add 3-4 drops to your diffuser. Try a lovely revitalising blend in your diffuser: add 2 drops of Lemon (included in the Family Essentials Kit), 2 drops of Eucalyptus, 1 drop of Melaleuca and 1 drop of Peppermint (included in the Family Essentials Kit). Add an extra drop or two of Lemon, Peppermint or Melaleuca if you haven’t got Eucalyptus – when it comes to blending your oils, there aren’t any rules – just give it a try. Some oils go better together than others.

Purify and tone the skin, and soothe occasional skin irritations: Apply 1-2 drops of doTerra’s Melaleuca oil to the irritated area/spot. Use with doTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil if your skin is sensitive. Add 1-2 drops to your facial cleanser or moisturiser for added cleansing properties.

Natural cleaning agent: Just like doTerra’s Lemon oil, Melaleuca is great for cleaning purposes as it protects against environmental and seasonal threats with a wonderful scent.

Natural alternative to Sudocrem, Bepanthem and other nappy creams: If you’re looking for a more natural way to sooth your baby’s bottom. You’ll be making great use of not only your Melaleuca oil, but your Lavender as well.

Melaleuca blends well with: Peppermint, Lemon (included in the Kit), Eucalyptus, and Lavender.

OREGANO

Before I found doTerra’s essential oils, Oregano was just the herb that sat in the back of my kitchen cupboard gathering dust! Oregano essential oil can help support a healthy immune system, healthy digestion and respiratory function, is an excellent source of antioxidants and can even be used as a household cleaner.

Because of Oregano oil’s high phenol content, caution should be taken when diffusing or inhaling – only one to two drops are needed. This oil packs a punch! When applied topically, Oregano should be diluted with doTerra Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Natural household cleaner: This is a powerful cleansing and purifying agent, so it is ideal for surfaces and countertops. Add 10 drops to 300ml of water and use in a clean spray bottle.

Help maintain healthy immune function and support healthy digestion: Add one drop to a glass of water each day.

Add flavour to your favourite Italian meals: One drop of Oregano essential oil can replace one tablespoon of ground oregano.

1 + 1 sometimes = 3! Some essential oils work even better when they are combined with a second oil. Combine Oregano and Peppermint (included in your Family Essentials Kit – yay!), for a more powerful result. Try this combination in your diffuser.

Diffuse in your home for a cleansing, green, sharp aroma: Add 1-2 drops to your diffuser.

Oregano oil blends well with: Peppermint, Lavender, Melaleuca (all included in the Kit), Basil, Rosemary, Bergamot, Cypress and Cedarwood,

FRANKINCENSE

This is known as ‘the king of essential oils’, and for a good reason! The fact that it comes in the Family Essentials Kit is one of the best things about the Kit! It’s one of the more expensive essential oils, so it makes the Kit incredible value.

Frankincense is a powerful essential oil known for its ability to beautify and rejuvenate skin when applied topically, and promote cellular health and immunity, among other benefits. The aroma promotes feelings of satisfaction, peace, relaxation and overall wellness.

I have this in a roller bottle and I was totally amazed when I first rolled it onto my face wrinkles (shhh!)…I could see an improvement almost immediately! I’m not claiming I’ve banished them forever and that I now look 21 again, but I can absolutely see the difference in the health and appearance of my skin. You can get inexpensive empty roller bottles from eBay.

DIY room spray: No more nasty chemical room sprays! Try combining Frankincense with one of the oils it blends well with (Lemon, Lavender, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, Lime, Geranium, Sandalwood and many others). With the room spray, you not only get the incredible aroma, but you and your family also experience its relaxing and peaceful benefits.Create a peaceful, relaxing environment: If you’re into yoga or meditation, or just want to relax, diffusing Frankincense’s aromatic properties will give you a positive and focused lift, helping you to feel peaceful and relaxed.

Relieve stress: If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed and stressed, apply Frankincense to the bottom of your feet (1 drop should be enough) to help you relax and balance your mood.

Revive dry hands and fingernails: Add a few drops to a moisturiser to help hydrate your skin. Why not buy an non-fragrant, inexpensive moisturiser and have it to hand whenever you want to combine it with an essential oil. There’s something quite satisfying about turning an inexpensive moisturiser into a luxury Frankincense cream!

Frankincense blends well with: Lime, Lemon, Wild Orange, Lavender, Cypress, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang and Geranium.

DEEP BLUE

This is a wonderful oil to use for a massage as it provides a cooling, soothing sensation. It can be used to soothe muscles and relax the body after strenuous activity [READ: any normal day as a parent!].

The Deep Blue bottle is the one with the bigger cap – used to differentiate it from other oils because it should not be ingested.

Deep Blue is a blend of eight essential oils: Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus.

Growing pains: If your children are having a growth spurt and their legs are feeling the effects of ‘growing pains’ and occasional aches, combine a few drops with doTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub onto their legs before bedtime.

Soothe muscles before and after exercise: Rub a few drops on muscles before and after exercise to reduce discomfort. Combine with a carrier oil such as doTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil for sensitive skin.

Tension headache: Rub a few drops on the back of your neck and temples.

Massage heaven: Either combine with a carrier oil such as doTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil or your favourite massage oil for a deeply soothing massage.

Soothe joint and muscle pain: If you suffer from joint ache, use Deep Blue alongside your regular treatment. Rub directly onto affected joints.

BREATHE – RESPIRATORY BLEND

Breathe is a blend of eight essential oils: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Cardamom.

It is known for its ability to maintain feelings of clear airways and helps cool and invigorate, promoting feelings of easy breathing. It can also be used to help you have a restful sleep. It has an airy and fresh mint aroma.

Promote clear airways: I use this on my children when they have a bit of a sniffle. I rub a few drops onto their chest at bedtime so they can breathe in the cooling and invigorating vapour.

Diffuse for a restful sleep: Fill your bedroom with a fresh and minty aroma and you will feel calm and restful.

Reduce seasonal threats: When the seasons are changing, you’re spending more time outdoors, or you’re feeling the effects of the seasons, diffuse 3-4 drops of Deep Blue, rub on the bottom of feet or add a few drops to the palm of your hands and take some deep breathes in.

Breathe blends well with: Peppermint, Wild Orange, Bergamot and Lime.

DIGESTZEN – DIGESTIVE BLEND

DigestZen has the nickname as the ‘tummy tamer’ blend! It’s a blend of seven essential oils: Ginger, Fennel, Coriander, Tarragon, Anise, Caraway and Peppermint that combine to help ease occasional stomach discomfort, maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract and aid digestion. It has a spicy, sweet, minty, liquorice aroma.

If you’re prone to motion/travel sickness, this is the blend for you.

Assist your digestive system: Add 1 drop to a glass of liquid or other drink.

Soothe occasional stomach upsets: Rub 1-2 drops to your writs, temple, bottom of feet or stomach. Massaging it directly onto your stomach will be soothing and comforting. Combine it with Fractionated Coconut oil so it is easier to massage.

Aid digestion of heavy meals: If you’re off on holiday or are going to a family get-together, add a few drops to a glass of water and drink.

Travel sickness: Rub DigestZen on your stomach before or during a journey to ease sickness and nausea.

ON GUARD – PROTECTIVE BLEND

This is the oil for any parents out there or, in fact, anyone who can’t help but reach for the hand sanitiser on a day trip – this is your new alternative!

On Guard is a blend of five essential oils: Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary – it even sounds clean as well as smelling amazing!

As well as the bottle of On Guard essential oil that comes in your Family Essentials Kit, you might like to try the wider On Guard product range. I use the foaming hand wash and the natural whitening toothpaste.

Here are just a few ways to use the pure essential oil:

Naturally support the immune and respiratory system: Add one drop of On Guard to a glass of water and drink.

Sense a bug or the sniffles lurking?!: If your children have brought home a sniffle or mild bug, reach for On Guard. Rub a drop or two on the bottom of their feet. Defend against sniffles, by proactively rubbing it onto their feet before school, particularly at the start of term. Combine 1 tablespoon of Fractionated Coconut Oil with 1-2 drops of On Guard.

Natural hand cleanser: Make up your own little bottle of hand cleanser by combining On Guard with Fractionated Coconut oil. Rub it on yours and your children’s hands and fingers when you’re out and about.

Natural household cleaner: For a natural, nontoxic cleaner, add a couple of drops of doTerra On Guard to a small spray bottle with water and use as an effective all-purpose surface cleaner. It’s got a lovely warm, woody, spicy aroma as well.

Immune boosting smoothie: Add a few drops to your homemade smoothies. Given its spicy, woody aroma, it might not taste great with all smoothies.

Uplifting, purifying and energising aroma: Add 3-4 drops to a diffuser to cleanse the air and surfaces and create an uplifting, purifying and energising fragrance throughout your home.

How Do I Use Essential Oils Safely?

Traditionally, certain essential oil application methods have been preferred or used exclusively. However, as the research surrounding essential oils continues to develop, a greater understanding of application methods is now understood. All application methods are safe when used appropriately, including aromatic, topical, and internal methods. One or multiple application methods can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

1 Aromatic

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application.

Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming. Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. Diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal. However, using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices.

You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand that is then cupped around the nose as you breathe deeply.

Additional aromatic uses For Essential Oils Include:

  • Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
  • Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens
  • Add oil to a batch of laundry or to dryer sheets
  • Use in household surface cleaners

2 Topical

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.

It’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Because every individual is unique, the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils

  • Neck
  • Forehead and temples
  • Chest and abdomen
  • Arms, legs, bottom of feet

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
  • Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:

  • Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
  • Eyes and inner ears, intimate areas
  • Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

3 Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds.

Essential oil contributes many health benefits as well as flavoring and aroma properties to foods. When in their concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits. Internal use is a very safe and effective method of application because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.

The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each constituent possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils.

Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.

Effective Methods of Internal Application

  • Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices
  • Remember that essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount
  • For more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops
  • Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
  • Take essential oils internally in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of honey or yogurt

Why I choose doTERRA?

Why doTERRA?

Our company was founded in 2008, with a commitment to establishing patterns of giving. There are no outside investors; the founders personally funded the startup and own 100% of the company. Back then, they took second mortgages, scaled back and worked without pay for years to own their work and make their own choices. doTERRA is now the largest oil company in the world, debt-free. Here is a sweet introduction to one of my personal heroes, Emily Wright.

We are family-focused and empowerment-centric. Mums, dads, babies and families are welcomed, encouraged and supported at classes and conferences. One of the seven founders, Emily Wright, is a mother of four; her commitment to our families is palpable. Personally, I’ve seen dozens of women on our growing team pay off long-held debts as they teach other families how to use Essential Oils, earning their way to more financial freedom.

DōTERRA gives back.

Healing Hands is our non-profit foundation, funded by the members, employees and executives of the company. We have an option to donate as little or as much as we wish with each order, and certain products are earmarked only for Healing Hands – our Hope Touch roller and our Rose Hand Lotion. Wellness Advocates are also invited to submit our projects to doTERRA for support, and I’ve helped usher three projects to completion thus far – the build of a school in Cambodia, the distribution of Oils and Diffusers to a mental hospital in New Zealand, and most recently, we raised 25k for Girls on Fire Leaders, and Healing Hands matched that donation for a total of 50k for camps, books, and Oils for the most at-risk girls in Kenya.

Healing Hands offers support to Operation Underground Railroad, also known as OUR, an organization committed to rescuing as many children as possible from sex trafficking in several countries, with operations happening regularly. Our donations also help fund the construction of safe house facilities in Thailand, Cambodia and Haiti where rescued children are educated, cared for and rehabilitated in safety back to freedom through Rapha House. We’re also helping 3 Strands to educate, empower and engage students and teachers all over the world to catch signs of human trafficking, take precautions and preventive measures to keep our children safe from these predators. Listen to a recent podcast about 3 Strands here.

Days for Girls, another organization for which doTERRA offers support, educates both girls and women to empower feminine health, providing sustainable feminine hygiene and care. Having served over one million girls and women to date, Days for Girls affords these girls and women dignity and supplies in order to function in society during their cycle so they aren’t missing chances to learn and grow out of poverty. Without sustainable solutions to manage their monthly cycle, women are abolished from society for the duration of their menstrual time every single month. More than 1 in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa, 113 million adolescent girls in India, and 30% of girls from rural areas of Brazil would miss school each year without the help of Days for Girls.

Our Oils are of the highest quality.

Pure, high quality, optimally-sourced Oils are at the heart of our success. Working with smallholder farmers, we ensure that these families are able to maintain their traditions and optimize growing and harvesting practices, form cooperatives for more bargaining power, eliminate middlemen, and get paid on time. In the villages where we grow, harvest and distill our Oils, we help renovate and build schools, much-needed medical facilities and infrastructure for clean water. As a result, the farmers are equally as committed to us.  Visit Source to You for detailed information on sourcing, quality and testing of our Oils, including our projects in Bulgaria, Kenya, Madagascar, Nepal, Guatemala, Haiti, Somaliland and beyond.

This video describes why and how dōTERRA uses the Co-Impact sourcing model.

Our testing practices are stringent. For transparent accountability, we’ve created a standard called Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® (CPTG), verified by respected third party labs. This standard is based on stringent testing throughout the entire process, from the monitoring of soil quality to testing for chemicals and adulterants in every litre of Oil. All of the basics are checked first: sight, smell, taste and touch. Then the lab rules out any presence of fungus, mold, pesticides, extenders and any other contaminants. If you wish to learn more, the science of the testing practices is here.

Each location has its own specific laws and rules governing agriculture and collecting wild-crafted botanicals. If an Oil fails the test, there is no secondary process for removing the pesticides or foreign matter; that batch is simply rejected. Other than the careful distillation of the Oils from the plant material, *no other processing takes place.* In each bottle, you are experiencing aromatic extracts, nothing added, nothing removed.

We focus on you.

On our site, you’ll find hundreds of hours of free education, guidance, recipes and other support for both oil users and those building businesses. When you create your own account with my personal team, I’ve created an extensive private educational website with archives and resources to help you learn about the Oils and grow your own thriving business if you wish. Once you’ve arranged your own wholesale account here, I’ll receive a notification and will email you all the access.

We are helping you clear your home of toxic products and chemicals. Harsh, toxic chemicals have no place in your cleaning and family care. From On Guard Cleaner Concentrate, Detergent, Hand Soap, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, and bar soap to all the Oils I use to diffuse and clean the air in our home, the plant molecules provide natural protection in a non-toxic and biodegradable way, to clean and keep us safe.

Our connection to each other. As we consistently connect as a team, I’m reminded of why this is such a good choice for me. I love my day job as a nurse, but I also love switching on my business brain and empowering myself to reach past where I thought I could go to cultivate a thriving organization of my own.

Close friendships have been formed, boosting my confidence when I needed it most. Together we are empowering families to lead and learn. And after many years of resisting, I’ve begun offering Study Groups of my own (ask me when the next virtual or in-person study group is at sarah@wildorangeessentialoil.com). Diving into various topics, from Essential Oils in daily practices to Oils for kids, from Oils for urgent care to Oils for recovery, stretching my mind in new directions has been a welcomed shift.

Candle Making with Essential Oils

Candle Making with Essential Oils

Bring the season into your home with these easy-to-make candles and create your favourite scent.

This Example recipe is for a Winter Candle, but replace the drops with 1 or 2 of your favourite oils.

Ingredients:
2 cups soy wax for candle making
Natural candle wick
15-20 drops Douglas Fir essential oil
15-20 drops Frankincense essential oil
Lolipop sticks
250mL glass jar or tin candle holder
Glass measuring cup
Decorative ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place measuring cup with wax in a few centimetres of boiling water to create a double boiler
  2. Add Frankincense and Douglas Fir essential oils (or any other oils you would like to try out)
  3. When the wax is melted in the double boiler use a spoon to drip a little bit of wax at the bottom of your jar or canister.
  4. Stick the wick in place while the wax is still liquid. Hold the wick in place until the wax is cool and hardened.
  5. Pour in the melted wax to fill your jar using 2 popsicle sticks to keep the wick in place while the wax is cooling and hardening.
  6. Wait 45 minutes for the wax to cool and harden. You may wish to put the candle in the fridge to speed up this process.
  7. Once the candle is hardened, trim the wick so that it sits about a centimetre above the top of the wax.
  8. Optionally, glue on your decorations. The possibilities are endless!
