Yoga Essential Oils

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India thousands of years ago. The original meaning of the word yoga is believed to be “unity,” which is key to the overall goal of the practice: pushing one’s consciousness toward transcendence. Since the beginning, yoga has evolved and changed in many ways and throughout the years research has reaffirmed that this practice not only benefits physical health, but mental and emotional health as well.

Yoga has proven to be beneficial because of its three main components: asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breathing technique), and meditation. Oftentimes when we exercise we forget to incorporate these components. For instance, even though we are constantly breathing, it is not necessarily something we are consciously thinking about. In yoga, breath is the life of the practice; each movement is associated with a deep inhale or exhale. It is this state of active breathing that has been found to be highly beneficial, especially when it comes to our brain wave activity.

Modern day research has shown that yoga can help us manage stress, but why is that exactly? Studies have shown that yoga has the ability to decrease salivary cortisol, which is a known stress hormone. Additional studies have also found that yoga-based relaxation training can help stabilise the function of the autonomic nervous system, the system that controls our breathing, heartbeat, and digestive processes. Yoga also plays a significant role in decreasing heart rate. One study demonstrated that not only is breathing beneficial for overall brain wave activity but so is meditation and posture-based poses. These yoga practices have been found to stimulate the amygdala and frontal cortex, which house our memory and emotional reactions. As you can see all of these benefits can have a positive effect on our physical, mental, and emotional

Now that we’ve learned about some of the science behind yoga, it’s time to understand how essential oils can relate to this ancient practice. While modern day science has yet to thoroughly ascertain the benefits of essential oils and yoga when combined, there are still many benefits to be received. Much like yoga, the use of essential oils aims to support the well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. Research has shown that essential oils not only provide emotional benefits but physical benefits as well. There are several studies that speak to the abilities of essential oils to help reduce anxious feelings and provide an overall sense of well-being. Other research studies have shown that they can help maintain concentration

Lastly, research has suggested that essential oils help promote feelings of clear breathing and open airways.

As you can see, yoga and essential oils easily go hand-in-hand. You can, and should, enhance your current practice by using the two together. So whether you are a brand new or seasoned yogi, everyone can benefit from using essential oils during their practice.

Here are some tips on oils to include in your practice:

Which Essential Oils do I use?

I get asked this and also ‘what is my favourite essential oil’ asked a lot! Its a hard one to answer because I use so many on a daily basis.

1. For my moods, feelings, mental health

For about 30 years I have had depression and anxiety and been on and off lots of prescribed anti depressant medication or drugs. I can honestly say that essential oils definitely help with my mood and feelings so 2 of my personal favourites are Wild orange essential oil hence I named this blog about it and Cheer a blend of :

  • Wild Orange Peel
  • Clove Bud
  • Star Anise Fruit/Seed
  • Lemon Myrtle Leaf
  • Nutmeg Kernel
  • Vanilla Bean Extract
  • Ginger Rhizome
  • Cinnamon Bark
  • Zdravetz Herb

Without these I would be on the maximum dose of SNRI Duloxetine and thanks to these wonderful oils I am on the minimum and aim to come off all together. So I can’t be more appreciative of these 2.

Sleep was also an issue and so I use Serenity oil on the soles of my feet at bedtime and on the back of my hands and also used to take serenity capsules although I no longer need them.

For a morning routine I use either a drop of lemon essential oil or zendochrine essential oil in my water and I take Life Long Vitality supplements every day.

If I feel like a cold is ‘coming on’ I use on guard either in a capsule or roller ball to prevent it from developing into an illness and in the last 2 years since using it ‘touch wood’ I haven’t had a really bad cold at all.

I used to suffer with acne and didn’t believe the ‘tea tree’ studies as it never seemed to clear my spots, but I now know why. I was using over the counter low quality oils. If I get a spot now and use Melaleuca essential oil, because this is tea tree in its raw and purest form it works!

Copiaba tree

Copaiba essential oil benefits and uses

Copaiba essential oil benefits and uses

For many years copaiba oil has been used for a variety of different purposes including:

  • as an anti-inflammatory
  • to promote wound healing
  • to provide pain relief
  • to treat a wide variety of infections, including bladder infections, gonorrhea, and strep throat
  • as an aphrodisiac
  • in cosmetic products, such as soaps, lotions, and shampoos

So far, many of the potential benefits of copaiba essential oil are based on anecdotal reports. However, that’s not to say that researchers haven’t been investigating the possible benefits as well.

Pain Relief

2018 studyTrusted Source compared the effect of massage with copaiba essential oil and Deep Blue essential oil in people with arthritis. They found that when compared to massage with coconut oil, the copaiba and Deep Blue blend led to a decrease in pain scores, an increase in finger strength, and improved finger dexterity.

Inflammation is associated with a variety of diseases and conditions. Because of this, research into the anti-inflammatory effects of copaiba could have an effect on the development of future treatments.

2014 studyTrusted Source assessed the effects of copaiba oil-resin in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS). They found that treatment with copaiba oil-resin did two things:

  • lowered production of some molecules that are associated with inflammation
  • lowered the amount of oxygen radicals, which can lead to cell damage

Another 2017 studyTrusted Source in rats looked at the effects of copaiba oil-resin treatment on tongue injury. The tongue tissue of rats treated with copaiba oil-resin showed a lower presence of immune cells associated with inflammation.

studyTrusted Source from 2018 evaluated the effect of copaiba oil-resin in a rat model of colitis. They found that although copaiba oil-resin reduced inflammation and oxygen radicals, it didn’t prevent colon damage.

Antimicrobial activity

One studyTrusted Source from 2016 evaluated the antimicrobial activity of copaiba oil-resin against a standard strain of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause skin and wound infections. Researchers found that even low concentrations of copaiba oil-resin were able to inhibit bacterial growth.

Another 2016 studyTrusted Source assessed the activity of a copaiba oil-resin gel on Streptococcus bacteria species present on teeth. The study found that the gel had antimicrobial activity against all species that were tested. However, more research is needed to determine the nature and efficacy of this activity.

Doterra Healthcare clinic

Doterra Healthcare Clinic

DoTerra Healthcare

With plans to transform healthcare by offering natural alternatives doTERRA is looking for teams of dedicated doctors, nutritionists, essential oil experts, and wellness coaches, who will “ensure that patients receive the high levels of care in their clinics.

The proposed medical services include: complete primary care, urgent care, wellness coaching, nutrition counselling, essential oil therapies, and genome testing.

They are appealing to the public’s clear and persistent frustration with mainstream care delivery, by promising comprehensive services that integrate conventional medical care with holistic alternatives, including of course use of essential oils as adjunctive therapies. They’re simultaneously tapping practitioner desire for a more humane, less-abusive, and healthy mode of practice.

A Ready-Made Market

doTERRA has over 400 full-time employees, and claims upward of 3 million wellness advocates. That’s a ready-made market of individuals who’ve self-selected for interest in botanical medicine, and other non-pharm alternatives.

Doterra oils

A survey conducted by the company suggests that 85% of patients in the USA want holistic and natural solutions, including essential oils, from their medical practitioner, but only 15% have doctors who are providing that sort of care.

According to the company’s site, 50,000 people pre-registered to join doTERRA Healthcare before it opened.

The flagship clinic will be located in Pleasant Grove, UT, to serve doTERRA’s on-site employees, followed by a roll-out of clinics across the US and beyond.

The pilot is being led by Brannick Riggs, MD, a family physician who trained in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona, and David Hill, DC, a chiropractor with broad interests in holistic modalities. Both have extensive experience with essential oils, and with doTERRA as a company.

If doTERRA is able to develop an effective and replicable practice model, it is likely to appeal to many holistic and functional medicine physicians who currently struggle with fiscal and practice development issues.

It remains to be seen how doTERRA will meet the very complex challenges of primary care delivery, but doTERRA have considerable resources,  management know-how, and a committed ecosystem of bright, independent-minded people who are seeking healthcare alternatives which points to success.

Infrared sauna benefits essential oils

Benefits of Infrared Sauna

According to some research use of an infrared sauna has a similar boost on the cardiovascular system as running. As you relax in the gentle infrared heat, your body is hard at work producing sweat, pumping blood and burning calories.

As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder to pump blood at a greater rate to boost circulation. This increase in your metabolism will burn calories.

Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscle, so they recover faster.

Muscles relax best when tissues are warm, for greater flexibility and range of motion. Far Infrared heat relieves muscle tension. The deep heat of far infrared saunas help peripheral blood vessels dilate, bringing relief and healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries.  Infrared heat also reduces soreness on nerve endings and muscle spasms as muscle joints and fibres are heated.

The deep heating will raise your core body temperature, inducing an artificial fever. How does this benefit the body? Fever is the body’s natural mechanism to strengthen and accelerate the immune response, as seen in the case of infection.

This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes via intense sweating, increases your overall health and resistance to disease.

One of the biggest infrared sauna health benefits is its ability to increase your blood circulation and stimulate the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins in the body.

Daily sauna sweating can help detoxify your body as it rids itself of accumulated highly toxic metals (lead, mercury, nickel, and cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid, and other organic and inorganic compounds.

Cellulite refers to superficial pockets of trapped fat, which cause uneven dimpling or “orange peel” skin. It appears in 90% of post-adolescent women and is rarely seen in men. Common, but not exclusive areas where cellulite is found are the buttocks, thighs, and the abdomen. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not related to obesity, and the appearance of cellulite is not always reduced by weight loss.

Sauna use and far infrared heat can increase heart rate and localised blood circulation, which essentially reverses the above-mentioned trends towards the accumulation of liquids in the fat cells to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Time spent in an infrared sauna benefits patients suffering from many forms of arthritis. Radiant heat has also been effective in the treatment of sprains, neuralgia, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and many other muscular-skeletal ailments. Much of the stiffness, aches and soreness that comes with ageing is reduced or eliminated.

Just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of an infrared sauna will help you feel relaxed, rejuvenated and renewed.

It’s a great time to get away and release any built-up tension and stress. It’s like having a day spa in your home, open all the time for your convenience.

Infrared Saunas have also been shown to affect the autonomic nervous system putting you in the parasympathetic (rest and digest) state allowing your body to heal.

The profuse sweating achieved after just a few minutes in a Sauna carries off deeply embedded impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and immaculately clean. Increased circulation draws your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface.

You’ll see improved tone, elasticity, texture and fresh colour. Increased blood circulation has also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions and cuts. In addition, open wounds heal more quickly, reducing scarring.

Why not add the benefit of essential oils to your sauna?

Essential oil diffuser

Essential oil diffuser types

There are a number of studies (plus a whole lot of anecdotal evidence) that diffusing essential oils can produce the following benefits, depending on the type of oil:

  • reduces stress
  • improve mental clarity
  • uplift our mood
  • calms and promote a sedative effect (useful before sleep)
  • purify the air

Essential oils are so much more than air fresheners!

Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

There are a few different types of essential oil diffusers which can be confusing. The ones I have come accross include:

  • Heat Diffuser
  • Evaporative Diffusers
  • Nebulising Diffusers
  • Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers

In addition to researching them I’ve tried each type of diffuser and have learned what I like and what I don’t about each type.

1. Heat Diffuser

A heat diffuser, like it sounds, uses heat to turn water with a few drops of essential oil into a gas that disperses into the air. These can be electric or use the heat of a candle/flame.

I have not found a heat diffuser that worked nearly as well as even the worst nebulizer or ultrasonic diffusers I’ve tried, so I can’t make any recommendations on these types of diffuser and since heat affects the beneficial properties of the essential oils, I definitely don’t recommend this method for diffusing oils in general.

2. Evaporative Diffusers

These diffusers use a fan to increase air flow across an essential oil soaked pad or lining. As the liquid evaporates, the scent (and its properties) move into the air.

Another type of evaporative diffuser is diffuser pendant jewelry. The theory is that the essential oil will naturally evaporate and permeate the air and skin.

I don’t find this type of diffuser nearly as effective as the remaining two.

3. Nebulizing Diffusers

Nebulizing diffusers are often considered the most powerful type of diffusers, and with good reason. They do not need water or heat to get the essential oil in to the air and they work by using an atomizer to create fine, airborne particles of essential oils and blowing them in to the air.

If you can’t tell, nebulizing diffusers are my favorite type of diffuser. If anyone gets sick they can keep a near-continuous stream of essential oils in the air and can fill a room of many square feet.

Here’s my thought process and experience with this type of diffuser:

  • Attaches directly to the bottle of essential oil and can be turned on with the flip of a switch
  • No water or set-up required
  • Strong concentration of essential oils released into the air
  • Timers control run time and rest time let you control how long it runs and provide an option other than continuous use
  • No light so they can be used at night.

  • Noise level is louder than ultrasonic diffusers
  • Uses oils more quickly than ultrasonic or other diffusers since they attach directly to the diffuser so you need to restock more frequently.
  • More expensive than most ultrasonic diffusers (though not by much)

Even just diffusing for 15 minutes will leave a lasting essential oil scent for hours.

4. Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers work in a similar way to nebulizing diffusers by creating a fine mist. The difference is that ultrasonic diffusers use water and essential oils to create an ultrasonic cool mist of water/oils that releases in to the air. They double as a humidifier, they don’t put out as strong of a concentration of essential oils since they also use water so oils last you longer.

  • Less expensive than nebulizing diffusers
  • Doubles as a humidifier
  • Many options to choose from
  • Doesn’t use heat
  • Water tank has a large capacity

  • Some have lights that can’t be turned off
  • Not as effective as nebulizing diffusers

What we use: Several different types of ultrasonic diffusers and I’ve found that some work better than others. These were our favorites:

  • The Petal DiffuserThe Petal Diffuser permeates an ultra-fine, yet substantial mist output into the air, releasing the aromatic and therapeutic benefits of doTERRA CPTG® essential oils quickly and safely. This high quality, affordable diffuser is perfect for both novice and experienced essential oil users who want a reliable, easy-to-use essential oil diffuser.Product FeaturesSubstantial mist output helps purify and humidify the air1, 2, and 4 hour diffuser settingsOptional LED lightUltra-fine mist reaches up to 330 square feetSimple, 3-piece diffuser is easy and convenient to useStable and light for the many spaces in your lifeand the best I can recommnd is the Lumo

Influenced by nature, the Lumo diffuser features a maple wood base and several light settings inspired by natural elements. Offering customizable output, Lumo can run 2 to 5 hours continuously and 10 hours intermittently.

Product Features

  • Customizable output: 2 or 5 hrs continuous preset/10 hrs intermittent preset (5 min. on/5 min. off)
  • Ultrasonic technology
  • Seven lighting color options
  • Maple wood base
  • Coverage of up to 540 sq. feet

Essential oils are powerful essences from plants with medicinal effects. I think using a diffuser is a great step, but urge everyone to do their homework. If you have a family, make sure to diffuse only Pure Certified Therapeutic Grade, safe essential oil blends and take breaks by buying a model with controlled mist settings.

Aroma marketing in shops

Aroma Marketing

What is aroma marketing?

It is nothing but targeting the sense of smell of the customers. Aroma marketing, can help and increase sales as well as the customer experience. It has been found from various researches that essential oils have the capability of evoking an emotional response and is also linked with memory. The inhaled aroma of the essential oils helps in stimulating the functioning of the brain. It also helps in enhancing the mood of the customer and thus helps in customer satisfaction.

  1. Using essential oils for the retail environment

With proper and careful selection of essential oils, you can create an extraordinary environment that will encourage customers to linger in your store. But, the essential oils that you are going to use needs to be chosen with care. If you choose something with a very strong scent, then it might not help. In turn, it can make customers turn away from your store.

Essential oils to be used for the retail environment
There are various combinations of essential oils for use in retail stores. Citrus essential oils:

  • Wild orange
  • Lemon
  • Bergamot

You can use essential oils from the mint family as well.

  • Spearmint
  • Peppermint

You can make a blend of these essential oils for a long-lasting effect. It has been found with the essence created by these oils, it can make customers buy something from your store. It can also make them visit the store again in some time.

Store scenting tips

Always look after the target audience before creating an aroma for your store. For example, you can pair up essential oil like vetiver along with products for men like men’s clothing or shaving kit. You can use geranium as well as lavender with products for women like lingerie or other items.

Creating a holistic ambience

Need to note that the aroma you are using should match with the ambiance and setting of your store. For example, with the proper matching of store music and aromatherapy, it can help in improving customer experience. You can use lavender with slow music for the best-desired effect. It can impart a positive effect on the customer’s mind.

2. Using essential oils for restaurants

cent can influence the behavior of a restaurant patron. If you use lavender in your restaurant, then customers would love to spend some more time there. Stimulating scents like mint and citrus are not so effective in restaurants. Try to use calming flower scents like ylang-ylang and clary sage.

3. Using essential oils and aromatherapy for waiting rooms

Waiting in the medical office or doctor’s waiting room is not at all a pleasant thing. Most of the patients remain stressed, full of anxiety. It has been found that aromatherapy can help in dealing with anxiety. So, you can use essential oils in medical waiting rooms. It can help in calming down the patients and soothe their minds. Essential oils like wild orange essential oil and lavender oil are the most recommended ones.

Some other ways of using essential oils for customer satisfaction:

Using essential oils in spas

Using essential oils in the steam rooms helps in setting up a relaxing environment. Beyond just making the steam room smell great, it also helps in wiping out bacteria. Essential oils like eucalyptus comes with several health benefits when used in the steam room. It can help in working as a great antidote for bad moods, mental fatigue, and sluggishness. You can also some shower mist infusions for a better guest experience like:

  • Lavender infused shower mist
  • Menthol infused shower mist
  • Tea tree infused shower mist
  • Mint-infused shower mist
  • Citrus infused shower mist

Using essential oils in beauty salons

The benefits of scent marketing can also be seen in salons. By using essential oils in your salon, you can create a soothing environment for your customers. It can also be used for spas and hair rejuvenating programs.

Benefits of aroma marketing

Scent marketing brings with it tons of benefits. Let’s have a look at some of them:

  • It helps in creating and improving brand recognition.
  • It helps in extending the lingering time of the customers.
  • Helps in improving the guest experience.
  • It helps in making your brand unforgettable.
  • It helps in increasing sales.
  • Scent marketing helps in attracting new customers.
  • Affect and improve performance in the workplace.
  • Helps in creating and increasing a heightened perception of the brand.
  • It helps in inspiring brand loyalty.

The strategy for aroma marketing

In order to activate the impulse of buying, the scent that you are going to use needs to have some contextual meaning. It should also correspond with both the environment of your store and the products as well. Try to keep your scents simple. Using hard-hitting scents might result in customers turning away from your store. Simple scents like orange are best to use in small stores. They are relaxing, enticing and easier for the mind to process and can also help the customers in focusing on their primary goal, that is shopping.
