3 Cool things about essential oils

3 Cool Things About Essential Oils Number 1 –  100% Natural & Safe

Potent essential oils

The first cool thing about dōTERRA essential oils is that they’re 100% natural and safe. There’s nothing added to the oil or taken away from the oil. They’re just simply pure essential oils with no side effects and no addictions. They’re safe for babies, children, adults and the elderly. Oils are extracts from plants that have amazing health benefits.. A pure oil is about 50-70 times more powerful than herbs. One drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to drinking 28 cups of peppermint tea. So they’re really potent!

One drop of peppermint was the equivalent of you drinking 28 cups of peppermint tea. That’s how powerful these oils are!

What I love about these oils is the CPTG standard. It stands for Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, and it means these oils are completely pure and potent. Pure means there are no foreign contaminants or fillers. Potent means that each plant was grown in a part of the world where that plant grows best, resulting in the absolute best chemistry for that plant. When you have the ideal natural chemistry, the essential oil extracted does exactly what we want it to do for our health.

So that’s the first cool thing about essential oils, they are 100% natural and safe.

Number 2 – More Effective Than Many Modern approaches to heath problems

Essential oils and the cell

The second cool thing about essential oils is that they are more effective than many modern approaches to health problems.

Let’s say this is a cell in your body (hold up your fist), and we know that cells have oily cell membranes. The cell membrane protects the cell, it keeps all the good things in and all the bad things out. Now two of the things that are harmful to our cells are Bacteria and viruses. Bacteria usually form on the outside of the cell and viruses duplicate the DNA on the inside of the cell. All you have to remember is bacteria on the outside viruses on the inside.

Let’s say you went to the doctor with a bacterial infection. What would he recommend for you? (Give you an antibiotic) And after taking the antibiotic for 7-10 days in most cases, it would probably clear up the infection – but it often comes with wreaking havoc on your gut, hormones, and immune system.

Now if you had a virus like the cold or flu, what would he say? (Go home, drink a lot of water, rest and let it run its course) The reason why is because most of the modern recommendations are water-based synthetic agents – and frequently come with side-effects and addictions. Water and oil don’t mix, so if the recommendation from your doctor is water-based, it will have a really hard time penetrating through that oily cell membrane and stopping the duplication of a virus.

Essential oils are different they are oil-based, which means they can permeate that cell membrane! They can work on a cellular level without side-effects or addictions, and they can combat bacteria on the outside of the cell and prevent the duplication of viruses on the inside. That is why they are often more effective than the modern approach to health problems.

Number 3 – Cheaper Than Traditional Medical Care

The third cool thing about essential oils is that they are cheaper than traditional medical care.

If your doctor gave you a prescription for an antibiotic, how much would it cost for the prescription? Its currently £9 here in the UK. Even if you don’t pay for prescriptions you still may need transport to the doctor or time off work?

When someone in my family has an ear infection, we rub two drops of lavender and two drops of melaleuca around their ear, and put them to bed. 12 hours later the ear infection is cleared up. It costs us about 50p. Now whether it costs you £9 for the prescription, or whether it costs £0 because you live in a country with free medical care. Essential oils are still less expensive than the petrol or diesel in the car you pay to go to the doctors. That’s not including the half day of work you probably had to take off for this emergency. We also haven’t taken into account the fact that antibiotics harm your gut, and that you might have to buy extra probiotics for two weeks to fix the damage, which is even more money.

We save hundreds of dollars a year in medical costs because of essential oils. You cannot afford NOT to use natural solutions! THAT is why essential oils are cheaper than traditional medical care.

Why do we store essential oils in amber bottles?

Essential oils are extremely precious and should be treated with respect – they can also be very expensive.

They can become damaged by ultra-violet light and therefore deteriorate more rapidly.

Essential oils should be stored in amber glass bottles. If you do store your oils in blue bottles they need to be kept in the dark. This is less important with brown bottles. Never decant the oils into clear glass or plastic bottles because they are so powerful they could actually dissolve the plastic!

They should never be placed in direct sunlight, so avoid sunny windowsills or shelves on radiators no matter how attractive the bottles look. Essential oils do not like extremes of temperatures. They are highly volatile which means that they evaporate rapidly. Always replace the caps immediately and ensure that the tops are tightly closed when the oils are not in use.

Pure essential oils will last for approximately three years from the bottling date. In excellent storage conditions (amber bottles in a cool place) they will keep for about five years. Citrus oils tend to have a shorter shelf-life due to their high proportion of terpenes, as do absolutes and resins which thicken even more with age and the smell of solvent becomes more noticeable.

Once essential oils have been diluted in a carrier oil, the shelf-life reduces dramatically. For maximum benefit use freshly made-up blends. A blend will keep for about 3-6 months if it is stored in an amber glass bottle in a cool place away from sunlight. If sweet almond oil is added then the shelf-life is approximately 6-9 months. If the smell alters and the oil becomes sour smelling then you should definitely discard it.

Do’s & Don’ts of Buying & Storage

We recommend only purchase essential oils if they are certified pure therapeutic grade.

*Always buy oils in amber glass bottles. Clear glass or plastic bottles do not contain pure essential oils.

*Do not store your oils in direct sunlight

*Are the essential oils all the same price? If they are, then you are definitely not purchasing pure essential oils. For instance, pure essential oil of rose and Frankincense will be far more expensive then lavender, rosemary or wild orange essential oil.

*If purchasing oils that are diluted, always verify the date they were blended.

*Essential oils should always be kept away from young children. If they are taken internally some essential oils can be highly dangerous.

*Never leave bottled pure essential oils standing on plastic, polished or painted surfaces which can be damaged by the chemical constituents.

What is the Genus Species?  Chamaecyparis obtusa

Why is this information important?  It is always important to know the genus species of a plant when using and purchasing essential oils. Using the common name is just not enough information.

Many companies may use a substitute species or a combination of species that does not offer therapeutic benefits. Remember, even though they may share some similar properties they are not at all the same.  And they are used for different purposes.

Where is the Name Derived From?  In Japan Hinoki means “white cedar“; it also means fire tree as it was and still is used to make fire through friction in the Shinto Shrines. Cypress comes from a Greek word “sempervivens” meaning “live forever”.

Why is this Information so Important?  Its not, it’s just a fun fact!

What is Nan’s Mental (Mindset), Emotional and Spiritual Interpretation of this Oil?

Hinoki allows the mind and body to relax by grounding the body in mother earth. As it does this tension and stress is released.

This oil is about opening the mind to potentiality and specifically opportunities. The more worry and stress we have in our life the more we limit our opportunities. To attract more opportunities we must be relaxed and allow the universe to bring them to us.

Using this oil with Sacred Angel or White Angelica and Vetiver is particularly useful in this manner. Open to opportunity by smelling Sacred Angel (open crown chakra) or Three Wise Men, then smelling Hinoki Essential (open heart chakra), then grounding the opportunity into mother earth with Vetiver (root chakra).

To release negativity or something you want to manifest in the world, I recommend using them in the opposite direction-first starting with Vetiver and ending with Sacred Angel.

By the way, any of the tree oils are very grounding emotionally and physically.

What Chakra is Affected?  The sacral, heart and crown chakras.

What is the Corresponding Color? Pink-brown

Use diluted – 50:50 dilution (one part essential oil: one part of vegetable oil). Then,

  • Apply several drops (2-4) on location
  • Apply to chakras
  • Diffuse

Can this Oil be Used for Animals? Yes, however at this time I have only used for emotional release. Great with Vetiver!

Yes. Have your animals smell it directly from the bottle or place a drop or two in your palm, then smell. Or place a drop in your palm and pet head to toe.

Note About Animal Use: Certain oils can be very toxic to cats particulary those that are not therapeutic grade. Please consult your vet if you are not sure about applying any essential oil to your pet.
