Panic attack essential oils

Essential oils for panic attacks and anxiety

For many years I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression and one of the symptoms, particularly if I’m very busy, feeling under pressure or overwhelmed, I suffer panic attacks.

A panic attack is a sudden feeling of overwhelming anxiety, and it’ll peak within minutes. A person who’s suffering from a panic attack may experience sweating, pounding heart, palpitations, accelerated heart rate, shaking or trembling, feelings of choking, feelings of shortness of breath or smothering, chest pain or discomfort, dizziness, nausea, abdominal distress, fear of dying, fear of losing control or numbness or tingling sensations.

Luckily, there are essential oils that can help relieve panic attacks, and the best essential oils for my panic attacks include lavender, rose, vetiver, ylang-ylang, bergamot, and chamomile. Read on to learn more about how essential oils can help you if you suffer them too.

Lavender

The most common essential oil for panic attacks is lavender. It may have a calming, relaxing effect when it’s inhaled. The reason for this is because it’s considered a nervous system restorative. It helps with sleep, restlessness, irritability, nervous stomach and nervous tension. Clinical trials show that inhaling lavender essential oil reduces stress and anxiety.

Rose

Rose essential oil is similar to lavender. It’s commonly used for relieving anxiety, and it significantly reduces it. Similar to lavender essential oil, rose also has calming, relaxing effects.

Vetiver

Vetiver oil is a nervous system tonic that causes calmness and stabilization, and it decreases hypersensitivity and nervousness. It’s helpful to use the oil for panic attacks and shock. Did you know that vetiver oil helps the immune, respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, digestive, excretory and nervous systems? If you’re having trouble falling asleep because of panic attacks, vetiver oil will help you fall asleep because it’s a natural sedative.

Ylang-ylang

Ylang-ylang is a popular oil that’s commonly used for anxiety and depression. The oil has calming and morally and spiritually elevating effects. The oil has been known to help with bravery and confidence. It’ll help relieve fearfulness. Similar to vetiver oil, ylang-ylang is a naturally strong sedative.

A 2006 study showed that ylang-ylang, bergamot, and lavender oils reduced psychological stress responses, serum cortisol levels, and high blood pressure levels when all of the oils were used once a day for four weeks.

If you have low blood pressure or sensitive skin, you may want to try another oil for panic attacks as ylang-ylang can decrease blood pressure and cause skin irritation.

Bergamot

Bergamot oil has calming, relaxing effects. It’s often used to help treat depression by increasing energy, but it can also help with insomnia, agitation, and relaxation.

According to a study, the oil has been proven to reduce corticosterone response in rats. Another study conducted in 2011 showed that applying bergamot oil with other oils help relieve depression and anxiety.

Chamomile

Chamomile oil may help with irritability, anxiety, and worry. A study found that the chamomile oil capsules eased anxiety symptoms when taken by mouth. If you’re allergic to ragweed, there’s a small risk that chamomile oil may cause an allergic reaction.

Diffuser in the home

Essential oils can be used in many ways. Diffusing is very popular for anxiety and I always have a diffuser upstairs and down at home, but oral and topical application can be used also so I carry my roller ‘doterra touch’ blends with me and pop a drop under my tongue in an emergency.

Essential oils for energy

Create Motivation and Energy

Do you find it hard to get out of bed every morning? Do you suffer with the lack of energy during the day? Do you find yourself reaching out for your numerous coffee refills and it’s barely mid-afternoon, maybe try reaching for an essential oil the next time.

Essential oils can help wake up your whole body by invigorating the senses very quickly, and make you feel revitalized and energetic, leading to a clearer head and then greater productivity. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, essential oils are amazing for their therapeutic properties and pack a powerful punch in such a small bottle! Only a few drops of these natural, potent aromatic compounds obtained from the flowers, leaves, seeds and bark of plants, can quickly get you back on your feet when you’re feeling depleted.

Let’s face it, we’ve all felt low on energy at times. There are many underlying reasons for feeling this way, including high stress, lack of proper sleep, adrenal fatigue, emotional  stress, low moods and more.
If you feel any of these symptoms below, you may be victim to low energy levels:

  • Inability to concentrate or focus
  • Lack of motivation
  • Feeling depressed
  • Body aches and pains
  • Feeling tired without having done much
  • Drowsiness at odd hours in the day
  • Increased or loss of appetite
  • Feeling irritable

Essential Oils are steam-distilled or cold-pressed, they are extracted from plants, and have aromatic properties which have incredibly amazing benefits.

Essential Oils are “adaptogens” because of their ability to uniquely “adapt” to the needs of the person using the oil, an irritated person might feel calm after using an oil, and a person with low energy levels may feel uplifted using the same oil!

The aromatic molecular compounds in essential oils can pass right through the blood/brain barrier, directly affecting the areas in our brain that control feelings of stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. Hence why the oils work so quickly as they enter the limbic system and into the brain and then changing your moods instantly.

So when you’re struggling with low energy, essential oils when applied topically, or inhaled and also used in a diffuser are proven to uplift the mood, re-energize, and calm mental stress.

Here are a few ways essential oils can help boost your energy levels:

  • Make you feel fresh and ready to tackle the day
  • Elevate your mood and promote positivity
  • Help you re-focus and concentrate
  • Reduce feelings of stress and anxiety
  • Alleviate fatigue and tiredness
  • Increase productivity levels
  • Give you the uplift you need to get going

Copiaba tree

Copaiba essential oil benefits and uses

Copaiba essential oil benefits and uses

For many years copaiba oil has been used for a variety of different purposes including:

  • as an anti-inflammatory
  • to promote wound healing
  • to provide pain relief
  • to treat a wide variety of infections, including bladder infections, gonorrhea, and strep throat
  • as an aphrodisiac
  • in cosmetic products, such as soaps, lotions, and shampoos

So far, many of the potential benefits of copaiba essential oil are based on anecdotal reports. However, that’s not to say that researchers haven’t been investigating the possible benefits as well.

Pain Relief

2018 studyTrusted Source compared the effect of massage with copaiba essential oil and Deep Blue essential oil in people with arthritis. They found that when compared to massage with coconut oil, the copaiba and Deep Blue blend led to a decrease in pain scores, an increase in finger strength, and improved finger dexterity.

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is associated with a variety of diseases and conditions. Because of this, research into the anti-inflammatory effects of copaiba could have an effect on the development of future treatments.

2014 studyTrusted Source assessed the effects of copaiba oil-resin in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS). They found that treatment with copaiba oil-resin did two things:

  • lowered production of some molecules that are associated with inflammation
  • lowered the amount of oxygen radicals, which can lead to cell damage

Another 2017 studyTrusted Source in rats looked at the effects of copaiba oil-resin treatment on tongue injury. The tongue tissue of rats treated with copaiba oil-resin showed a lower presence of immune cells associated with inflammation.

studyTrusted Source from 2018 evaluated the effect of copaiba oil-resin in a rat model of colitis. They found that although copaiba oil-resin reduced inflammation and oxygen radicals, it didn’t prevent colon damage.

Antimicrobial activity

One studyTrusted Source from 2016 evaluated the antimicrobial activity of copaiba oil-resin against a standard strain of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause skin and wound infections. Researchers found that even low concentrations of copaiba oil-resin were able to inhibit bacterial growth.

Another 2016 studyTrusted Source assessed the activity of a copaiba oil-resin gel on Streptococcus bacteria species present on teeth. The study found that the gel had antimicrobial activity against all species that were tested. However, more research is needed to determine the nature and efficacy of this activity.

Essential oil diffuser

Essential oil diffuser types

There are a number of studies (plus a whole lot of anecdotal evidence) that diffusing essential oils can produce the following benefits, depending on the type of oil:

  • reduces stress
  • improve mental clarity
  • uplift our mood
  • calms and promote a sedative effect (useful before sleep)
  • purify the air

Essential oils are so much more than air fresheners!

Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

There are a few different types of essential oil diffusers which can be confusing. The ones I have come accross include:

  • Heat Diffuser
  • Evaporative Diffusers
  • Nebulising Diffusers
  • Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers

In addition to researching them I’ve tried each type of diffuser and have learned what I like and what I don’t about each type.

1. Heat Diffuser

A heat diffuser, like it sounds, uses heat to turn water with a few drops of essential oil into a gas that disperses into the air. These can be electric or use the heat of a candle/flame.

I have not found a heat diffuser that worked nearly as well as even the worst nebulizer or ultrasonic diffusers I’ve tried, so I can’t make any recommendations on these types of diffuser and since heat affects the beneficial properties of the essential oils, I definitely don’t recommend this method for diffusing oils in general.

2. Evaporative Diffusers

These diffusers use a fan to increase air flow across an essential oil soaked pad or lining. As the liquid evaporates, the scent (and its properties) move into the air.

Another type of evaporative diffuser is diffuser pendant jewelry. The theory is that the essential oil will naturally evaporate and permeate the air and skin.

I don’t find this type of diffuser nearly as effective as the remaining two.

3. Nebulizing Diffusers

Nebulizing diffusers are often considered the most powerful type of diffusers, and with good reason. They do not need water or heat to get the essential oil in to the air and they work by using an atomizer to create fine, airborne particles of essential oils and blowing them in to the air.

If you can’t tell, nebulizing diffusers are my favorite type of diffuser. If anyone gets sick they can keep a near-continuous stream of essential oils in the air and can fill a room of many square feet.

Here’s my thought process and experience with this type of diffuser:

Pros:

  • Attaches directly to the bottle of essential oil and can be turned on with the flip of a switch
  • No water or set-up required
  • Strong concentration of essential oils released into the air
  • Timers control run time and rest time let you control how long it runs and provide an option other than continuous use
  • No light so they can be used at night.

Cons:

  • Noise level is louder than ultrasonic diffusers
  • Uses oils more quickly than ultrasonic or other diffusers since they attach directly to the diffuser so you need to restock more frequently.
  • More expensive than most ultrasonic diffusers (though not by much)

Even just diffusing for 15 minutes will leave a lasting essential oil scent for hours.

4. Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers work in a similar way to nebulizing diffusers by creating a fine mist. The difference is that ultrasonic diffusers use water and essential oils to create an ultrasonic cool mist of water/oils that releases in to the air. They double as a humidifier, they don’t put out as strong of a concentration of essential oils since they also use water so oils last you longer.

Pros:

  • Less expensive than nebulizing diffusers
  • Doubles as a humidifier
  • Many options to choose from
  • Doesn’t use heat
  • Water tank has a large capacity

Cons:

  • Some have lights that can’t be turned off
  • Not as effective as nebulizing diffusers

What we use: Several different types of ultrasonic diffusers and I’ve found that some work better than others. These were our favorites:

  • The Petal DiffuserThe Petal Diffuser permeates an ultra-fine, yet substantial mist output into the air, releasing the aromatic and therapeutic benefits of doTERRA CPTG® essential oils quickly and safely. This high quality, affordable diffuser is perfect for both novice and experienced essential oil users who want a reliable, easy-to-use essential oil diffuser.Product FeaturesSubstantial mist output helps purify and humidify the air1, 2, and 4 hour diffuser settingsOptional LED lightUltra-fine mist reaches up to 330 square feetSimple, 3-piece diffuser is easy and convenient to useStable and light for the many spaces in your lifeand the best I can recommnd is the Lumo
