Essential oil bath bombs

Essential Oil Bath Bombs

Bath bomb fun

Bath bombs are amazing fizzy balls of joy. Drop one into your bath and get ready to have an amazing and relaxing bathing experience. When you toss them into the water they begin to fizz releasing wonderful scents and skin beneficial ingredients for your skin.

Give the bath bomb gift

They make excellent gifts for both adults and children. When making for kids, try adding some color to the mixture. Not only will they love that the water changes colors, but they’ll also love the fizz from the bath bomb. Note: If you don’t have a bath, these bath bombs can still be effective in a shower. The water will help dissolve the bath bomb and release the aroma of the essential oils into the steam.

Why do we store essential oils in amber bottles?

Essential oils are extremely precious and should be treated with respect – they can also be very expensive.

They can become damaged by ultra-violet light and therefore deteriorate more rapidly.

Essential oils should be stored in amber glass bottles. If you do store your oils in blue bottles they need to be kept in the dark. This is less important with brown bottles. Never decant the oils into clear glass or plastic bottles because they are so powerful they could actually dissolve the plastic!

They should never be placed in direct sunlight, so avoid sunny windowsills or shelves on radiators no matter how attractive the bottles look. Essential oils do not like extremes of temperatures. They are highly volatile which means that they evaporate rapidly. Always replace the caps immediately and ensure that the tops are tightly closed when the oils are not in use.

Pure essential oils will last for approximately three years from the bottling date. In excellent storage conditions (amber bottles in a cool place) they will keep for about five years. Citrus oils tend to have a shorter shelf-life due to their high proportion of terpenes, as do absolutes and resins which thicken even more with age and the smell of solvent becomes more noticeable.

Once essential oils have been diluted in a carrier oil, the shelf-life reduces dramatically. For maximum benefit use freshly made-up blends. A blend will keep for about 3-6 months if it is stored in an amber glass bottle in a cool place away from sunlight. If sweet almond oil is added then the shelf-life is approximately 6-9 months. If the smell alters and the oil becomes sour smelling then you should definitely discard it.

Do’s & Don’ts of Buying & Storage

We recommend only purchase essential oils if they are certified pure therapeutic grade.

*Always buy oils in amber glass bottles. Clear glass or plastic bottles do not contain pure essential oils.

*Do not store your oils in direct sunlight

*Are the essential oils all the same price? If they are, then you are definitely not purchasing pure essential oils. For instance, pure essential oil of rose and Frankincense will be far more expensive then lavender, rosemary or wild orange essential oil.

*If purchasing oils that are diluted, always verify the date they were blended.

*Essential oils should always be kept away from young children. If they are taken internally some essential oils can be highly dangerous.

*Never leave bottled pure essential oils standing on plastic, polished or painted surfaces which can be damaged by the chemical constituents.

Top middle and base notes

Essential oil “notes”

Essential oil notes

Once you become more experienced with essential oils and as your collection grows you may want to learn more about blending.

Although you may simply be looking at blending a therapeutic oil for a certain ailment, the fragrance should still be “balanced” and in harmony and this is where the fragrance notes come into play.

Essential oils are classified by their “notes” or scent characteristics.

Top, middle and base

This chart shows the typical classification and can be used in combining essential oils.

Top Notes

Essential oils that are classified as top notes normally evaporate very fast and typically have anti-viral properties. They tend to be light, fresh and uplifting in nature and are usually inexpensive. Top notes are highly volatile, fast acting, and give the first impression of the blend. However, they are not very long lasting due to the evaporation.

Middle Notes

The bulk of essential oils are considered middle notes and normally give body to the blend and have a balancing effect. The aroma of middle notes are not always immediately evident and may take a couple of minutes to establish their scent. They are normally warm and soft fragrances.

Base Notes

Essential oils that are classified as base notes are normally very heavy and their fragrance is very solid. It will be present for a long time and slows down the evaporation of the other oils. These fragrances are normally intense and heady. They are normally rich and relaxing in nature and are typically the most expensive of all oils.

Blending

Blending does not only rely on the notes alone, since some oils are extremely fragrant and in some cases, overpoweringly so.

When using these very strongly fragranced oils, it is best to add a drop of oil at a time to prevent it from overpowering your entire blend.

Have fun and experiment

Blending oils can be fun, so remember that the end result should be to your liking, so it is no problem if you do not follow the guidelines about using the different notes at all – they are only guidelines to help you along.

3 ways to use essential oils

How Do I Use Essential Oils Safely?

Traditionally, certain essential oil application methods have been preferred or used exclusively. However, as the research surrounding essential oils continues to develop, a greater understanding of application methods is now understood. All application methods are safe when used appropriately, including aromatic, topical, and internal methods. One or multiple application methods can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. They can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends in one of three methods:

1 Aromatic

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application.

Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming. Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. Diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal. However, using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices.

You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand that is then cupped around the nose as you breathe deeply.

Additional aromatic uses For Essential Oils Include:

  • Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
  • Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens
  • Add oil to a batch of laundry or to dryer sheets
  • Use in household surface cleaners

2 Topical

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit.

Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.

It’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Because every individual is unique, the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils

  • Neck
  • Forehead and temples
  • Chest and abdomen
  • Arms, legs, bottom of feet

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
  • Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:

  • Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
  • Eyes and inner ears, intimate areas
  • Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

3 Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds.

Essential oil contributes many health benefits as well as flavoring and aroma properties to foods. When in their concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits. Internal use is a very safe and effective method of application because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.

The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each constituent possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils.

Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.

Effective Methods of Internal Application

  • Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices
  • Remember that essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount
  • For more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops
  • Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks
  • Take essential oils internally in a veggie capsule or add to a small amount of honey or yogurt

Essential oil diffuser

Essential oil diffuser types

There are a number of studies (plus a whole lot of anecdotal evidence) that diffusing essential oils can produce the following benefits, depending on the type of oil:

  • reduces stress
  • improve mental clarity
  • uplift our mood
  • calms and promote a sedative effect (useful before sleep)
  • purify the air

Essential oils are so much more than air fresheners!

Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

There are a few different types of essential oil diffusers which can be confusing. The ones I have come accross include:

  • Heat Diffuser
  • Evaporative Diffusers
  • Nebulising Diffusers
  • Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers

In addition to researching them I’ve tried each type of diffuser and have learned what I like and what I don’t about each type.

1. Heat Diffuser

A heat diffuser, like it sounds, uses heat to turn water with a few drops of essential oil into a gas that disperses into the air. These can be electric or use the heat of a candle/flame.

I have not found a heat diffuser that worked nearly as well as even the worst nebulizer or ultrasonic diffusers I’ve tried, so I can’t make any recommendations on these types of diffuser and since heat affects the beneficial properties of the essential oils, I definitely don’t recommend this method for diffusing oils in general.

2. Evaporative Diffusers

These diffusers use a fan to increase air flow across an essential oil soaked pad or lining. As the liquid evaporates, the scent (and its properties) move into the air.

Another type of evaporative diffuser is diffuser pendant jewelry. The theory is that the essential oil will naturally evaporate and permeate the air and skin.

I don’t find this type of diffuser nearly as effective as the remaining two.

3. Nebulizing Diffusers

Nebulizing diffusers are often considered the most powerful type of diffusers, and with good reason. They do not need water or heat to get the essential oil in to the air and they work by using an atomizer to create fine, airborne particles of essential oils and blowing them in to the air.

If you can’t tell, nebulizing diffusers are my favorite type of diffuser. If anyone gets sick they can keep a near-continuous stream of essential oils in the air and can fill a room of many square feet.

Here’s my thought process and experience with this type of diffuser:

Pros:

  • Attaches directly to the bottle of essential oil and can be turned on with the flip of a switch
  • No water or set-up required
  • Strong concentration of essential oils released into the air
  • Timers control run time and rest time let you control how long it runs and provide an option other than continuous use
  • No light so they can be used at night.

Cons:

  • Noise level is louder than ultrasonic diffusers
  • Uses oils more quickly than ultrasonic or other diffusers since they attach directly to the diffuser so you need to restock more frequently.
  • More expensive than most ultrasonic diffusers (though not by much)

Even just diffusing for 15 minutes will leave a lasting essential oil scent for hours.

4. Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers work in a similar way to nebulizing diffusers by creating a fine mist. The difference is that ultrasonic diffusers use water and essential oils to create an ultrasonic cool mist of water/oils that releases in to the air. They double as a humidifier, they don’t put out as strong of a concentration of essential oils since they also use water so oils last you longer.

Pros:

  • Less expensive than nebulizing diffusers
  • Doubles as a humidifier
  • Many options to choose from
  • Doesn’t use heat
  • Water tank has a large capacity

Cons:

  • Some have lights that can’t be turned off
  • Not as effective as nebulizing diffusers

What we use: Several different types of ultrasonic diffusers and I’ve found that some work better than others. These were our favorites:

  • The Petal DiffuserThe Petal Diffuser permeates an ultra-fine, yet substantial mist output into the air, releasing the aromatic and therapeutic benefits of doTERRA CPTG® essential oils quickly and safely. This high quality, affordable diffuser is perfect for both novice and experienced essential oil users who want a reliable, easy-to-use essential oil diffuser.Product FeaturesSubstantial mist output helps purify and humidify the air1, 2, and 4 hour diffuser settingsOptional LED lightUltra-fine mist reaches up to 330 square feetSimple, 3-piece diffuser is easy and convenient to useStable and light for the many spaces in your lifeand the best I can recommnd is the Lumo

Essential oils are powerful essences from plants with medicinal effects. I think using a diffuser is a great step, but urge everyone to do their homework. If you have a family, make sure to diffuse only Pure Certified Therapeutic Grade, safe essential oil blends and take breaks by buying a model with controlled mist settings.
