If you are struggling with low libido, the first thing to understand is that you are not alone. For men, low libido often culminates in erectile dysfunction, which ranges in prevalence from 5% in younger men to 25% in men over 65. In women, low libido is common in all stages of life thanks to fluctuating hormones.
Having a low libido periodically or chronically is nothing to be ashamed of. Bringing your concerns into the open can start the path toward health, intimacy, and resolution.
Causes of low libido vary from person to person and range from lifestyle influences to serious disorders. Some of the most prevalent factors include:
As gentle and relaxing aromas, these oils can be used in diffusions, sprays, topical applications and more. Get creative to see how you can boost libido by incorporating these essential oils into both your daily life and romantic life.
As an anxiety-relieving, calming oil, it comes as no surprise that rose essential oil is also traditionally used as an aphrodisiac. As a pricey oil, though, rose is most efficiently used in blends or heavy dilutions.
Application: Blend into a perfume to carry this romantic floral scent with you, or diffuse periodically throughout the day for both partners to enjoy.
A precious and pricey oil derived from delicate flower petals, jasmine has proven itself well in studies. Researchers tested alertness and “behavioral arousal” after a topical treatment of jasmine oil. Of course, the participants were found to be more refreshed, with their senses on alert.
Application: Apply jasmine topically in a perfume or sensual massage oil for men and women. Note that the delicate petals sometimes require the use of a solvent to extract the oil. Check labels carefully, especially for an organic certification.
A 2014 study undertook the question of menopause symptom relief and essential oils. The found that simply inhaling hormone-balancing clary sage essential oil had an anti-depressant effect on menopausal women. When libido is low due to hormonal shifts like menopause, clary sage is a balancer that may bring some relief.
Application: Diffuse or inhale periodically to relax, balance hormones, and get in the mood.
Ylang ylang is widely used as an aphrodisiac throughout the aromatherapy world. Its gentle floral scent is appealing to nearly everyone, and its application potential is diverse. Enjoy with other floral oils or deepen the fragrance with sandalwood.
Application: Diffusion, inhalation, or diluted into a carrier oil as a massage oil for both men and women.
Essential oil derived from orange blossoms instead of the fruit’s peel is called neroli, a precious and very useful oil. In one clinical trial, researchers found that “inhalation of neroli oil helps relieve menopausal symptoms, increase sexual desire, and reduce blood pressure in postmenopausal women,” making it another helpful option when libido is low due to hormones or stress.
Application: Diffusion or inhalation a couple of times each day for calming, balancing effects.
As a whole herb, “Fennel seeds have been reputed to increase milk secretion, promote menstruation, facilitate birth and alleviate the symptoms of the female climacteric, increase libido and alleviation of the dysmenorrheal symptoms.” Fennel essential oil retains some of these estrogenic effects, making it a beneficial addition to your libido-increasing, hormone-balancing diffusion or massage blends.
For any hormone issue our recommended Blend is a Roll on Clary Calm!
Men and women of all ages have faced low libido and have found hope and renewal. There is no shame in admitting the struggle and seeking a solution! As a bonus, openness and partnership in finding a remedy or resolution as a couple will help to increase intimacy, as well.
To relieve the stresses of everyday life, boost libido and begin to ignite a spark with your significant other, try this DIY libido boosting blend diffused or diluted into a carrier oil (almond or coconut are excellent!) for a soothing massage. Simply blend:
Directly into a diffuser (or inhaler, with one drop each) or into a tablespoon or two of the carrier oil of your choice.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work.
The 3 main features of PCOS are:
If you have at least 2 of these features, you may be diagnosed with PCOS.
Polycystic ovaries contain a large number of harmless follicles that are up to 8mm (approximately 0.3in) in size.
The follicles are underdeveloped sacs in which eggs develop. In PCOS, these sacs are often unable to release an egg, which means ovulation does not take place.
It’s difficult to know exactly how many women have PCOS, but it’s thought to be very common, affecting about 1 in every 10 women in the UK.
More than half of these women do not have any symptoms.
If you have signs and symptoms of PCOS, they’ll usually become apparent during your late teens or early 20s.
They can include:
PCOS is also associated with an increased risk of developing health problems in later life, such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels.
The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but it often runs in families.
It’s related to abnormal hormone levels in the body, including high levels of insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that controls sugar levels in the body.
Many women with PCOS are resistant to the action of insulin in their body and produce higher levels of insulin to overcome this.
This contributes to the increased production and activity of hormones like testosterone.
Being overweight or obese also increases the amount of insulin your body produces.
There’s no cure for PCOS, but the symptoms can be treated. Speak to a GP if you think you may have the condition.
If you have PCOS and you’re overweight, losing weight and eating a healthy, balanced diet can make some symptoms better.
Medicines are also available to treat symptoms such as excessive hair growth, irregular periods and fertility problems.
If fertility medicines are not effective, a simple surgical procedure called laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) may be recommended.
This involves using heat or a laser to destroy the tissue in the ovaries that’s producing androgens, such as testosterone.
With treatment, most women with PCOS are able to get pregnant.
What is the best way to use essential oils for PCOS?
Diffusion– For many oils, diffusion is the most effective method. It can be accomplished in a variety of ways including simply opening a bottle, using a vaporiser or diffuser (check manufacturer instructions) or a warmer.
Topical– In this method, essential oils are applied directly to the skin. Usually, oils are diluted in a carrier oil, but some may be used “neat.” fractionated coconut oil or roller ball bottles are popular methods of application. Many women have success using the topical method in conjunction with reflexology.
Ingestion– Some very specific oils can be ingested, but if you choose this option, proceed with extreme caution and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
This is one of the best all-around oils for PCOS. Clary sage fights acne, relieves anxiety, depression and stress, and boost hair growth. Importantly, it also works toward hormone balance and fertility.
Geranium stimulates the adrenal cortex, helping to balance emotions, alleviate anxiety & depression and improve focus. It is particularly good for balancing hormones, improving fertility, and increasing progesterone. Geranium even helps balance out the oils in your skin for help fighting acne!
One of the oldest applications of ylang ylang is as an antidepressant. It works to balance your cortisol & adrenals (reducing stress) as well as to promote emotional balance. As an added bonus, women with PCOS often see improvements in fertility and hair growth.
Frankincense Essential Oil is another essential oil which is invaluable for both men and women.
It is an Adrenal Adaptogen, which helps to calibrate the stress response in both men and women, helping to restore us to a state of homeostasis.
Who doesn’t love the smell of Ceaderwood? Good news! Ceaderwood can help reduce insulin resistance (support blood sugar balance) and even help you lose weight.
Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils for good reason. While it is best known for promoting relaxation and relieving stress, it can also help bring emotional balance and reduce anxiety and depression. That makes it a home run for the whole family! If that isn’t enough, women with PCOS can see added benefits including reduction in hirsutism (unwanted hair), hair growth, hormone balance, and improvement in acne.

“Chakra”, which is the Sanskrit word for “wheel”, refers to seven site specific concentrations of energy emanating from the body. Each of these Chakra centres govern its own expression of associated bodily, emotional and spiritual energy, yet each are linked and in tune with all the others.
When one or more of the chakras is over- or under-expressing its associated energy, itmanifests as an imbalance in the body, mind and spirit. When all of the chakras are balanced in their expression, then the physical, mental and spiritual well being is manifested.
Essential Oils Promotes Chakra Balancing
Within the practice of aromatherapy, the influence that aromatic plant essential oils have on the body, mind and spirit, can be adapted to promote greater balanced chakra functioning. By applying essential oils one can either activate and energize sluggish chakra functions or calm and quieten over-active ones. Balancing oils are good candidates for maintaining support of well-regulated chakras.
A combination of both activating and calming oils will tend to have an overall balancing and supportive benefit to the chakras. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Root Chakra – (Nutmeg / Cloves / Patchouli / Vetiver / Bergamot) A foot massage is a great way to balance the root chakra which regulates your sense of groundedness and stability. Nutmeg will activate a sluggish root chakra, while patchouli and vetiver calm an over active one. Choose a balancing essential oil such as bergamot to help maintain a smoothly functioning root chakra.
Sacral Chakra – (Cardomom / Orange / Ylang Ylang / Neroli / Bergamot / Sweet Orange / Sandalwood) The sacral chakra, which influences your sensuality, benefits from a lower back massage. Spicy cardamon essential oil awakens a dormant sacral chakra, while ylang ylang and neroli calm . Look to sweet orange and sandalwood to maintain a well functioning sacral chakra.
Solar Plexus Chakra – (Chamomile / Eucalyptus / Juniper Berry / Vetiver / Helichrysum / Citrus Bliss / Grapedruit / Lemon) A gentle tummy massage influences the functioning of the solar plexus chakra which influences your gut instincts. Apply eucalyptus and juniper berry to activate the solar plexus, and vetiver or helichrysum to calm an over active one. Good balancing oils to apply to an already well expressed solar plexus chakra are citrus bliss, grapefruit and lemon.
Heart Chakra – (Palmarossa / Lavender / Sweet Marjoram / Geranium / Rose)
The emotional centre that is the heart chakra readily benefits from a supportive perfumed annointing oil, applied to the breast bone or massaged into the middle back area. Palmarossa essential oil will open the heart chakra, while lavender and sweet marjoram will quieten it down. Try regular applications of geranium or rose essential oil to maintain a well functioning heart chakra.
Throat Chakra – (Lemon / Lavender / Roman Chamomile / Vanilla / Coriander Seed / Ginger) A body spray applied to chest and neck areas is an efficient way to influence the functioning of the throat chakra which influences your expressiveness and communication. Turn to lemon essential oil to open a sluggish throat chakra, and vanilla or Roman chamomile to calm. Coriander seed and ginger are balancing oils to maintain the even expression of the throat chakra.
Third Eye Chakra – (Rosemary / Clary Sage / German Chamomile / Frankincense / Sandalwood) The visionary, awareness supporting third eye chakra can be influenced with an anointing oil applied to the forehead or through simple diffusion and inhalation. Rosemary and Clary Sage essential oils will open a sleeping third eye chakra, while German chamomile will stabilize and focus this visionary chakra. Frankincense or sandalwood are good choices to maintain a clear and balanced third eye chakra.
Crown Chakra – (Lavender / Neroli / Vanilla / Frankincense) A room diffusion applied to the airspace around you is the best way to balance the transcendent crown chakra which occupies the space above the crown of your head. Spicy sweet lavandin clarifies a low functioning crown chakra, while neroli or vanilla calm. Look to frankincense to maintain a well functioning crown chakra.
