10 Essential Oils for Emotional Health

Our emotional health can directly influence how the rest of our body feels and functions. When we are in emotional distress, it lowers our overall quality of life and how we feel day-to-day. Emotional health affects how we make decisions, how we interact with others, and how we respond to events that happen in life. Things like stress, anxious feelings, changes in the weather, and a host of troubling (yet common) emotions can negatively influence our mood. Some studies have even shown a negative correlation between the use of smartphones and mental health. No matter what is distressing us, it is important to find tools and coping methods to help counteract negative emotions—otherwise it can seriously impact our quality of life.

Among many resources, we can use essential oils for emotional health by creating a sense of calmness and wellbeing, or producing an uplifting environment. Every essential oil has its own unique chemical profile, but most oils can be categorised as having either uplifting or calming properties.

Keep reading to learn about 10 essential oils that can be used for emotional health.

Applying essential oils for emotional benefits

When you’re ready to use essential oils for emotional health, there are a few ways to effectively experience the potency and power they have to offer. When you find the oil you want to use, try any of these application methods:

  • Massage onto the base of the skull
  • Rub on the inside of the elbow
  • Use an essential oil diffuser
  • Apply a drop to the palms and inhale
  • Rub into the wrists and carry the aroma with you all day

Find what works for you

Remember, essential oils work differently for everyone. Because each oil has such a complex chemical makeup, and because aromas interact with the part of our brain that stores our personal memories and experiences, no two people will experience one essential oil in the same exact way. It is important to remember that an oil that is comforting or uplifting for someone else might not have the same effect on you.

Discover your favorite oils. Try smelling a few oils with your eyes closed to see which ones you really like. By taking in the aroma of the oil, it is easier to discover what really helps you.

Incorporate oils into your personal routine. To utilize the calming, uplifting, grounding, energizing, or comforting effects of essential oils for emotional health, try incorporating your favorite oils into your everyday activities. Essential oils can be used during yoga, as part of your skincare routine, diffused in the car, and nearly any other part of your day you can think of.

Be consistent. Rather than using essential oils sporadically when you want to alter your mood, try using small amounts on a more regular basis. Some people complain that they don’t experience the benefits of essential oils for emotional health, but a one-time application isn’t always a guarantee of a mood change.

Practice other healthy habits. As mentioned, essential oils are just one resource for promoting good emotional health. By adopting other healthy habits in conjunction with essential oil use, you can help to promote better emotional health overall. Things like quality sleep, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and getting time outside in the sun are an important part of feeling emotionally healthy.

Seek extra help. When your quest for an emotionally-balanced life becomes overwhelming, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reaching out to friends and family and seeking professional help can provide you with extra help on your journey to good emotional health. …To learn more about essential oils and emotional health, listen to the doTERRA Podcast, “Emotional Health with Essential Oils”, or read the doTERRA eBook,

Why do we store essential oils in amber bottles?

Essential oils are extremely precious and should be treated with respect – they can also be very expensive.

They can become damaged by ultra-violet light and therefore deteriorate more rapidly.

Essential oils should be stored in amber glass bottles. If you do store your oils in blue bottles they need to be kept in the dark. This is less important with brown bottles. Never decant the oils into clear glass or plastic bottles because they are so powerful they could actually dissolve the plastic!

They should never be placed in direct sunlight, so avoid sunny windowsills or shelves on radiators no matter how attractive the bottles look. Essential oils do not like extremes of temperatures. They are highly volatile which means that they evaporate rapidly. Always replace the caps immediately and ensure that the tops are tightly closed when the oils are not in use.

Pure essential oils will last for approximately three years from the bottling date. In excellent storage conditions (amber bottles in a cool place) they will keep for about five years. Citrus oils tend to have a shorter shelf-life due to their high proportion of terpenes, as do absolutes and resins which thicken even more with age and the smell of solvent becomes more noticeable.

Once essential oils have been diluted in a carrier oil, the shelf-life reduces dramatically. For maximum benefit use freshly made-up blends. A blend will keep for about 3-6 months if it is stored in an amber glass bottle in a cool place away from sunlight. If sweet almond oil is added then the shelf-life is approximately 6-9 months. If the smell alters and the oil becomes sour smelling then you should definitely discard it.

Do’s & Don’ts of Buying & Storage

We recommend only purchase essential oils if they are certified pure therapeutic grade.

*Always buy oils in amber glass bottles. Clear glass or plastic bottles do not contain pure essential oils.

*Do not store your oils in direct sunlight

*Are the essential oils all the same price? If they are, then you are definitely not purchasing pure essential oils. For instance, pure essential oil of rose and Frankincense will be far more expensive then lavender, rosemary or wild orange essential oil.

*If purchasing oils that are diluted, always verify the date they were blended.

*Essential oils should always be kept away from young children. If they are taken internally some essential oils can be highly dangerous.

*Never leave bottled pure essential oils standing on plastic, polished or painted surfaces which can be damaged by the chemical constituents.

Infrared sauna benefits essential oils

Benefits of Infrared Sauna

WEIGHT LOSS & INCREASED METABOLISM

According to some research use of an infrared sauna has a similar boost on the cardiovascular system as running. As you relax in the gentle infrared heat, your body is hard at work producing sweat, pumping blood and burning calories.

As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder to pump blood at a greater rate to boost circulation. This increase in your metabolism will burn calories.

MUSCLE PAIN RELIEF

Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscle, so they recover faster.

Muscles relax best when tissues are warm, for greater flexibility and range of motion. Far Infrared heat relieves muscle tension. The deep heat of far infrared saunas help peripheral blood vessels dilate, bringing relief and healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries.  Infrared heat also reduces soreness on nerve endings and muscle spasms as muscle joints and fibres are heated.

IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOST

The deep heating will raise your core body temperature, inducing an artificial fever. How does this benefit the body? Fever is the body’s natural mechanism to strengthen and accelerate the immune response, as seen in the case of infection.

This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes via intense sweating, increases your overall health and resistance to disease.

DETOXIFICATION

One of the biggest infrared sauna health benefits is its ability to increase your blood circulation and stimulate the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins in the body.

Daily sauna sweating can help detoxify your body as it rids itself of accumulated highly toxic metals (lead, mercury, nickel, and cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid, and other organic and inorganic compounds.

IMPROVES APPEARANCE OF CELLULITE

Cellulite refers to superficial pockets of trapped fat, which cause uneven dimpling or “orange peel” skin. It appears in 90% of post-adolescent women and is rarely seen in men. Common, but not exclusive areas where cellulite is found are the buttocks, thighs, and the abdomen. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not related to obesity, and the appearance of cellulite is not always reduced by weight loss.

Sauna use and far infrared heat can increase heart rate and localised blood circulation, which essentially reverses the above-mentioned trends towards the accumulation of liquids in the fat cells to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

EASE JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS

Time spent in an infrared sauna benefits patients suffering from many forms of arthritis. Radiant heat has also been effective in the treatment of sprains, neuralgia, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and many other muscular-skeletal ailments. Much of the stiffness, aches and soreness that comes with ageing is reduced or eliminated.

STRESS AND FATIGUE REDUCTION

Just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of an infrared sauna will help you feel relaxed, rejuvenated and renewed.

It’s a great time to get away and release any built-up tension and stress. It’s like having a day spa in your home, open all the time for your convenience.

Infrared Saunas have also been shown to affect the autonomic nervous system putting you in the parasympathetic (rest and digest) state allowing your body to heal.

IMPROVES SKIN

The profuse sweating achieved after just a few minutes in a Sauna carries off deeply embedded impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and immaculately clean. Increased circulation draws your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface.

You’ll see improved tone, elasticity, texture and fresh colour. Increased blood circulation has also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions and cuts. In addition, open wounds heal more quickly, reducing scarring.

Why not add the benefit of essential oils to your sauna?

Frankincense essential oil

Frankincense essential oil

Frankincense essential oil is also used as an ingredient in perfume, incense, and skin care products.

Frankincense essential oil Uses

In aromatherapy, frankincense oil is typically used for the following conditions:

  • Acne
  • Anxiety
  • Colds
  • Coughs
  • Indigestion
  • Ulcers

Frankincense essential oil is also used to alleviate stress and relieve pain.1

When used as an ingredient in skin care products, frankincense essential oil is said to treat dry skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, scars, and stretch marks.

Health Benefits

While preliminary research suggests that frankincense essential oil may offer certain health benefits, there is currently a lack of research testing the health effects of frankincense oil. A component in frankincense, boswellic acid, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Here’s a look at the science.

Cancer

Laboratory research on human cells indicates that frankincense essential oil may possess immune-stimulating and cancer-fighting properties that could aid in the protection against breast cancer2 and pancreatic cancer3 . However, it’s important to note that these studies were conducted in a lab (and not in people) and didn’t test the aromatherapeutic use of frankincense oil. More research is needed.

A combination of essential oils including frankincense oil may help sleep in people with cancer, according to a study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice in 2016. For the study, people with cancer were given personal inhaler devices containing essential oils.4

Of those who used the device, 64 percent had an improvement of at least one point on the sleep scale. One essential oil blend found effective included frankincense (Boswellia carterii), mandarin (Citrus reticulata), and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).

Osteoarthritis

Frankincense appears to have anti-inflammatory properties and several studies have examined its use for osteoarthritis and knee pain.1

One 2018 review of published studies found Boswellia serrata extract shows clinically significant pain reduction for short-term use.5 However, studies showing its efficacy for long-term pain reduction are lacking.

Possible Side Effects

Research is needed to assess the potential benefits and risks. Ingesting frankincense essential oil may have toxic effects and isn’t recommended, unless under a doctor’s supervision.6

In addition, some individuals may experience irritation or an allergic reaction when applying frankincense essential oil to the skin. A skin patch test should be done before using any new essential oil. Additionally, essential oils shouldn’t be applied to skin undiluted.

Pregnant or nursing women and children should consult their health care providers before using essential oils.

It’s also important to note that self-treating a condition with frankincense essential oil and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences.

Dosage and Preparation

There is no standard or recommended dose for frankincense essential oil.

When a drop or two is combined with a carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or avocado oil), frankincense essential oil can be applied to the skin or added to baths in small amounts.

Frankincense essential oil can also be inhaled after sprinkling a drop or two of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or by using an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer.

In aromatherapy, several other essential oils are often used in combination with frankincense.

What To Look For

Essential oils are not regulated by the FDA and do not have to meet any purity standards. When purchasing essential oils, look for a supplier who either distills their own material or deals directly with reputable distillers and uses gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to analyze the quality of the product.

When buying pure frankincense essential oil, check the label for its Latin name, Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacra. No other oils ingredients should be listed. If you see another oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil, the frankincense is diluted and should not be used in a diffuser.

Essential oils should be packaged in a dark amber or cobalt bottle and stored out of sunlight.

Other Questions

I have type 2 diabetes. Can frankincense essential oil lower blood sugar?

Despite its purported use as an anti-diabetic agent, a placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine in 2018found frankincense essential oil did not have any significant blood sugar lowering effects over a placebo.

Is it safe to ingest frankincense essential oil?

While some essential oil companies recommend ingesting frankincense essential oil for a wide variety of health ailments, there is no evidence to support its safety or efficacy. If you choose to ingest essential oils, be sure you are using certified therapeutic oils and follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully and discuss it further with your doctor.

Can frankincense essential oil be applied directly to the skin?

Frankincense is a mild oil and most people can apply it directly to skin, or neat, without any issues. However, if you experience any burning, tingling, or irritation, dilute the oil by rubbing a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil, over the irritated area. Do not apply frankincense oil close to your eyes as its vapors may irritate eyes.
